The Preston & Steve show on Philadelphia radio station WMMR is an institution. The station itself has been on the air in Philadelphia as WMMR for 49 years. Preston & Steve have been on the air for 10 years as has their annual charity event, Campout for Hunger. Every year, the station moves down to a tent in South Philly, at the arena complex and broadcasts live for an entire week, collecting non-perishable food donations and money for Philadelphia food bank "Philabundance."
I happen to drive a Jeep Rubicon, and when I heard that WMMR DJ Jaxon was looking for Jeep drivers to drop off food as part of a challenge vs. a local Porsche club, I was in.
On Wednesday, December 2nd, I took "Ruby" down to Philadelphia, filled up with canned food and non-perishable things, and joined the convoy at the xFinity Live! Center. Not only did I see some VERY tricked-out Jeeps - I have large tire envy - I got to meet some great people and organizations and hang out watching Jaxon broadcast live.
It was a rainy, dreary, day, but the sight of 128 Jeeps driving around South Philadelphia was a beautiful, colorful one. Most of them were stuffed to the gills (thankfully, you can Fold n Tumble the back seat pretty easily) with cans and boxes of food. I'm not sorry to say that the Porsche club outgunned us (this year, anyway), with 182 participants and 17,000 lbs of food donated.
The final tally was 12,000 lbs of food donated by the Jeep clubs. Over the entire event, WMMR collected over a million pounds of food and more than $153,000 for Philabundance as well.
EmpireCovers was happy to donate a Titan 5L Jeep cover to one lucky driver and his little girl - congratulations!
